Why Do Bruising and Swelling Occur After a Procedure?
Post-procedure bruising and swelling result from a temporary reaction in the blood vessels and tissues following injection or laser/chemical peel treatments. After fillers and Botox, mild bruising typically resolves in 3-7 days, and swelling largely subsides in 2-5 days.
How to Reduce Bruising and Swelling
- First 24-48 hours: Cold compresses (ice pack wrapped in a thin towel) applied at 10-15 minute intervals; avoid sleeping face down and use an elevated pillow.
- Arnica: Arnica cream or gel, with physician approval, can help alleviate bruising.
- Nutrition: Limit salt and alcohol intake; drink plenty of fluids.
- Rest: Postpone strenuous exercise and exposure to hot environments for 48-72 hours.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If you experience excessive swelling, spreading redness, fever, or severe pain, consult your physician immediately. Additional recommendations can be found in our post-filler care and post-Botox care articles.
If bruising and swelling persist beyond the normal timeframe, or if there is noticeable asymmetry on one side, notify your physician. Always apply cold compresses over a thin towel rather than directly on the skin to prevent the risk of frostbite. Sleeping with an elevated pillow for the first 48 hours helps reduce facial edema.
