What Are AHA and BHA?

AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) and BHA (beta hydroxy acid) are acids used to exfoliate dead skin cells, cleanse pores, and enhance skin radiance. Glycolic acid (AHA) and salicylic acid (BHA) are the most common types, used in both professional peeling treatments and home skincare routines.

AHA (Glycolic Acid) Usage

Glycolic acid provides superficial exfoliation and is effective for dark spots, dullness, and fine lines. At-home products with low concentrations (5-10%) can be used 1-2 times per week. Professional application is explained in our chemical peeling article.

BHA (Salicylic Acid) Usage

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and preferred for oily and acne-prone skin. Using a 2% BHA toner or serum at home is common. For sensitive skin, start with a lower frequency.

AHA and BHA by Skin Type

Dry and normal skin: AHA-focused. Oily and acne-prone skin: BHA or an AHA+BHA combination. You can determine the right choice for your skin type using our skin type guide.

Applying AHA and BHA consecutively on the same day can increase the risk of skin irritation; using them on different days or separating them between morning and evening is safer. Using SPF 30 or higher sunscreen after peeling prevents hyperpigmentation. After professional peeling sessions, you may need to pause at-home acid use for the duration recommended by your physician.
